Kaveri delta with its extensive network of 36 branch rivers 1505 main channels irrigating an area over 12.5 lakhs acres attracts everyone. General sir Arthur Thomas cotton, chief engineer, madras presidency admired and respected by the engineering fraternity and farmers as “the father of irrigation in south India”, took “kallanai of kaveri” as the model for the new anaicut he constructed at dowlaiswaram across Godavari following the same technique.
